Zagreb, Zagreb
Ivo Robić

Vraćam se Zagrebe tebi, tebi na obale Save,
Vraćam se Zagrebe tebi, tebi pod zidine stare...

Zagreb, Zagreb, otvaraj vrata parkova sna,
Zagreb, Zagreb, tisuće želja nosim ti ja,
Zagreb, Zagreb, najljepšu pjesmu pjevat ću ja,
Zagreb, Zagreb, najdraži meni si grad.

Mnoge tajne Gornjeg grada, svaka klupa pričat zna,
Mnogo sunca svakog dana, u tvom krilu želim ja.

Zagreb, Zagreb, otvaraj vrata parkova sna,
Zagreb, Zagreb, tisuće pozdrava nosim ti ja,

Zagreb, Zagreb, najljepšu pjesmu pjevat ću tad,
Zagreb, Zagreb, najdraži meni si grad.

Mnoge tajne Gornjeg grada, svaka klupa pričat zna,
Mnogo sunca svakog dana, u tvom krilu želim ja.

Vraćam se Zagrebe tebi, tebi na obale Save,
Vraćam se Zagrebe tebi, tebi pod zidine stare.

Something about the history of Zagreb...

Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and the biggest town in C Croatia as well. Historically the town has grown two settlements on neighboring hills: Gradec and Kaptol that make the nucleus of today's city, its historical centre. Zagreb is situated in the continental part of Croatia on the slopes of the Mount Medvednica and on the banks on the river Sava at a height of 122 meters (Zrinjevac). The origin of the name of Zagreb is associated with a legend when an old duke, tired and thirsty told a young girl Manda to bring water from the spring. The duke said: „ Manda, girl fetch deep!˝ (on Croatian = "zagrabiti!")

The name of Zagreb is first mentioned in writing in the year 1904 when there was a diocese founded on Kaptol. That in itself suggests that there had been a settlement before that.

  • • in 1242 Zagreb (then still named Grades) is given the status of a free king's town by the certificate called „Zlatna Bula˝ and issued by the Croatian – Hungarian king Bela IV
  • • in 1557 Zagreb is first mentioned as the capital of Croatia in historic documents
  • • in 1607 the clergy (Jesuits) founded the first high school and the academy. The year is considered to be the year of the founding of the Zagreb University.
  • • in 1776 the Croatian government was moved from Varaždin to Zagreb
  • • on September 7, 1850; Kaptol, Gradec and Vlaska Ves were united in the city of Zagreb

According to the Census from 2011. Zagreb has the population of 790.117 citizens. The broader city area has a population of more than a million.
